Job Title: Mechanic

Position: Mechanic

Contract: 260/days, Twelve Month Employee

Salary Scale: Per approved School Board salary scale ($46,274 - $72,330)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work: Under general supervision, inspects, diagnoses and repairs gasoline and diesel powered automotive, truck and a variety of other power-driven equipment with safe work practices; and performs other related duties, as assigned. Designated essential personnel are required to work during times when the schools are closed. By virtue of their job description, essential personnel provide services that are essential to the health, welfare and safety of the NKCPS employees. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Assistant Director/ Lead Mechanic. Work may be required outside normal work hours in emergency and on-call situations.

Qualifications: Applicants applying for this position must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license, and have or be able to obtain a CDL within three (3) months of employment. Applicants applying must be able to pass a background check and drug test. Must be able/ willing to obtain appropriate certifications. State Inspection Certification strongly preferred. Must have own tools to work on vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications: Four (4) years of experience as a journey-level automotive mechanic; Possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license with a commercial driver's license (CDL) endorsement or the ability to obtain the CDL endorsement within 3 months of hire date. State Inspection Certification strongly preferred.

Essential Functions: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

• Inspects and diagnoses mechanical and electrical malfunctions in automobiles and trucks, including buses, and pursuit vehicles.
• Repairs and replaces defective or worn parts and accessories.
• Performs preventive maintenance work, lubrication and inspection on automobiles and trucks.
• Performs major and minor engine tune-ups. Also overhauls engines, transmissions, differentials, front ends, steering gears and braking systems.
• Installs emergency equipment in patrol vehicles.
• Operates diagnostic equipment and evaluates readings.
• Diagnoses auto/truck air conditioners and repairs.
• Diagnoses ABS systems, repairs brakes and related components.
• Operates tire changing equipment, inspects and repairs tires and tubes.
• Steam cleans engines.
• Responds to service calls.

Assists in training new automotive maintenance and transportation employees.

Operate a personal computer and other modern office equipment

Meets deadlines under stressful conditions.

Resolves conflict and responds appropriately to complaints.

Completes multiple priority projects with conflicting deadlines.

Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the safety and occupational hazards associated with the work; knowledge of theory, operation and repair of internal combustion engines, automatic and manual transmissions, electrical systems, chassis/drivetrain, suspension/steering, brakes, cooling systems, air conditioning and other automotive components; General knowledge of the operation and repair of the components, systems and accessories of gasoline and diesel powered equipment and machinery; general knowledge of the tools, methods and equipment, as well as the special tools, gauges, hydraulic valves and control and braking systems, electronic ignition, and machinery and shop equipment used in the repair, servicing and maintenance of transit equipment; general knowledge of lubricating systems, oils, greases, tools and attachments used in lubricating gas vehicles and related equipment and methods used in electric-arc and acetylene welding and all OEM and after-market diagnostic scan tools.

Ability to inspect automotive and other power-driven equipment to locate and diagnose malfunctions; ability to recognize mechanical problems by sight and sound; ability to perform minor and major mechanical repairs on all NKCPS and County equipment; ability to trace electrical wiring by color, coding and touch; Ability to use a variety of power hand tools, diagnostic equipment, shop equipment with skill and safety; ability to inspect, adjust, repair and fully understand the purpose/function of vehicle emission control system; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep records of repair and service operations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and students.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED with coursework in automotive repair, fleet experience, automotive maintenance, repair and operation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements: Possession of an appropriate (CDL) commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must be able/ willing to obtain appropriate certifications.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Physical Ability: This work requires frequent standing, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, and climbing to pick up or move objects, and crawling through various areas requiring moving on hands and knees; This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of lifting and moving objects up to 100 pounds; work requires reporting to the worksite daily; frequent operations of data entry device and repetitive motion; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock

Sensory Requirements: Work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Some tasks require oral communications ability.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions and tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme heat or extreme cold, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, vehicle maintenance areas, automobile, light to moderate traffic).
